THE STANDARDS OF GOD'S JUDGMENT IN ROMANS 2
Because every man will someday stand before God, it is fitting that God should clue man in as to the rules. This is accomplished with the four-fold use of the little but important preposition kata (kata) which introduces a standard or norm or principle. It is usually translated according to. It carries the idea of being in accordance with, or in keeping with something. Here are the uses of this key literary device in Romans 2:1-16:
- JUDGMENT IS IN KEEPING WITH TRUTH (2:2)
"...THE JUDGMENT OF GOD IS ACCORDING TO TRUTH..."
JUDGMENT IS IN KEEPING WITH THE HEART (2:5)
"BUT AFTER THY...HEART TREASUREST UP UNTO THYSELF WRATH..."
JUDGMENT IS IN KEEPING WITH WORKS (2:6)
"WHO WILL RENDER TO EVERY MAN ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS."
JUDGMENT IS IN KEEPING WITH THE GOSPEL (2:16)
"...GOD SHALL JUDGE THE SECRETS OF MEN BY JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MY GOSPEL."
